The Sukeban Phase
Listen, this isn’t mcwhiteface youtube’s wikipedia readout channel, so im not gonna explain what a fucking sukeban is, you oughta know.
Age of Encounter:
One of my most notable autistic phases has been with sukeban shows, I discovered the concept when I was around 17 and it blew my balls off, i’ve always been into girls kicking the everliving shit out of eachother, but I never graced the tokusatsu circle up to that point.
That’s probably why it hit so hard for me, but I dunno, to this day it is my favorite toku subgenre, something about the mix of melodrama and action, plus all the retarded weapons and setpieces all the while taking itself completely seriously really sells me into it.
Also, another very valuable aspect to me is the astonishing lack of het fanservice, now im not gonna put my 2016 tumblr hat on and say that fanservice is bad or whatever, but obviously, as a gay dude it never was for me. And to have a subgenre with so little interest in that aspect feels refreshing.
Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy some sex comedy or hentai as long as it’s well animated and or funny, but the protagonists of this kinda shows are live action minors most of the time, gimme a break.
Show List Bogaloo:
With all that preamble outta the way let’s get to the sauce, here’s a list of the shows i’ve seen thus far and some of my thoughts or feelings or whatever.
Sukeban Deka 1 (live action):
The primordial soup for this stuff in my opinion, everything you need for the basics, cool protagonists, banger music, melodramatic mother story, the works.
The biggest problems it faces are the lack of interesting fights, it’s always Saki confronting some sugar daddies and it gets pretty stale at points, also it has a quite fine ending, but after that they tried to keep it going with the villain’s daughter and it doesn’t work as well as I hoped.
The real final episode of the series feels like a cancellation, they should have made a movie or something idk.
Gotta say, it does feel a bit bland considering all the shit that came later but you have to respect it.
Kill la Kill:
Does this count? In my head it counts, people don’t realize how much of the structure is similar to those old shows.
Just to make it quick, its fantastic, was one of my favorite anime at one point, I don’t have much more to say about it really.
Pro Golfer Reiko:
God dammit man I really want to watch this one, I can’t remember if the whole show has been found or if it’s still in the lost media territory but still. From what little I could gleam it looks pretty rad, but you can only go so far with machine translated subs.
I get the distinct feeling that the show probably derrails hard into boring drama and less into action but that’s just me, I can’t really form an opinion until some messiah translates it into english or spanish.
Sukeban Deka 2 (live action):
Fuck, I gotta do my homework, I remember not starting it proper because of the download speed of my internet, I have to catch up, especially because it is fully translated.
Sukeban Deka 3 (live action):
What the actual shit???!
They translated the full series like less of a year ago, I have to jump to that asap. I can’t predict my reaction to it, Sukeban Deka 3 supposedly goes absolute ape shit, it sounds like a good time tbh.
Shoujo Commando Izumi:
People are right, this is the most terminator a girl can get, really fun set of first episodes but it completely losses its cool factor in the middle, low time or budget I figure.
That blow dryer transformation sequence is pretty funny, it’s true.
Sukeban Deka (OVA):
Really fun at points but they should have made it one ova instead of two, the story has nothing going for it anyways, I swear, I hate that fucking art lady and her whole stolen painting subplot, it’s a bad example of how the melodrama of the 70s tv show really doesn’t work in the context of a 90s anime, thank god she dies.
Machine Girl:
Don’t tell me you watched this one before the album you’re lying.
Really great, wish there was more like it, the melodrama doesn’t make itself insufferable and the action is well made. Shout out to the drill tits bitch at the end, legend.

Teenage Hooker Became Killing Machine:
Man, I do love a long title, the movie itself is just as spectacular, I can’t bring myself to spoil it.
Just go watch it now, fucking GO.
Extra stuff to watch at some point:
*The Sukeban Deka movie
*Yo-Yo Girl Pig
*Sailor Suit and Machine Gun
*Sailor Fuku Hangyaku Doumei
*The Hana no Asuka Gumi movie jisus christ
*Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion
*Girl Boss Guerilla
The Coin Rule Them All:
We’ve reached the end my friend, and I saved my favorite for last.
Hana no Asuka Gumi is the best thing ever, like holy shit where do I begin with this beast.
The most badass protagonist, lesbian undertones, lesbian overtones, random haiku reciting, a gothic victorian villian with a porcelain doll, girls only school civil wars, skateboard fighting, fucking crow fights on a burning ship, the most non het looking side protagonists I have ever seen, lost media credentials, “don’t smoke weed, retard”, the most creepypasta looking ass ova, and of course, the coin, you can’t beat the golden coin, it is the most retarded and cool weapons to have ever existed, no contest.
With all that fanboying out of the way, what do we have.
The TV Show:
Pretty rad thus far, i’ll update this once a finish it, but I doubt it will get much better after episode 8.
The Movie:
A holy grail if i’ve ever seen one, heard some absolutely crazy shit about it and it will become one of my favorite things ever no doubt. But I wanna finish the tv show first.
The First OVA:
Like I said before, I cannot believe it looks like that, I do love it, but the story is whatevs, I think it’s directly borrowed from the manga.
The Second OVA:
I have no words, wasn’t fucking around earlier, it may actually be my favorite ova, and it wound up inspiring a canceled animated series of mine when I was around 18. If you have to watch one thing of Hana no Asuka Gumi make it this one.
The Manga:
WhHhyyYyy isn’t this fully translated, god I need it so bad, I even heard the author made new stuff around 2019, goddammit why isn’t it translated yet.
My Cancelled (?)
Sukeban Series:
I never actually thought i’d ever talk about this project to the public but yea, when I was around 18 I thought of making an animated show about sukebans and stuff, I ended up canning it in favor of starting production on Dream Mirage, it was for the better I think.
Overall if I ever go back to it i’d have to severally restructure the pitch because it still feels too close to Hana no Asuka Gumi + Sukeban Deka. But I doubt it would happen this decade, the three projects im handling at the moment are more than enough busywork for a mortal.
What Did This Leave in me:
Overall i’m really grateful to have found this subgenre when I did, I think it marked my taste delinquent media and for stupid bullshit, that may sound derogatory but it truly isn’t.
